How to open and close a register at the start and end of a shift

Every shift on the till is a register session. You open it with the cash you put in the drawer (the float), sell through the day, and close it by counting what is in the drawer. ChecKmate compares your count with what should be there, so any shortage is caught the same day.

Opening the register

Step 1: Choose the register

Open Point of Sale from the Dashboard. On Select a Register, press Start Session on your register. (If it says Continue Session, the register is already open - press it to carry on.)

Step 2: Sign in with your PIN

Choose your name and enter your 4-digit PIN.

Step 3: Enter your opening float

The Open Register window asks for your Starting Cash Float. Count the cash you are putting in the drawer, type it in Opening Float Amount, add a note if you like, and press Open Register. You are now on the till and ready to sell.

Closing the register (cashiers)

At the end of the shift, press Close at the top right of the POS. Count the cash in the drawer, type it in Amount Counted, add any notes and press Close Register.

This is a blind close: the cashier does not see how much the drawer should hold, so the count is honest. ChecKmate works out the difference for the manager.

Closing the register (managers and admins)

Managers and admins can close with the full summary. Open the menu (the three lines above the cart) and choose Close Register.

You see the Session Summary (who opened it, when, the opening float and the number of transactions), the Session Sales by payment method, and the Expected Cash in Drawer - the float plus cash sales, cash in and tips, minus cash out and cash refunds.

Type the cash you counted in Actual Cash in Drawer. If it matches, you see Perfect Balance. Press Close Register.

If the count is different, ChecKmate shows the Shortage or Overage before you close. Recount first - if it is still out, add a note explaining it in Closing Notes. The difference is recorded against the register and the person who ran it, and appears under Employee Management in Recent Discrepancies.
