How to Install a Receipt Printer on a Windows PC
This guide walks you through installing a thermal receipt printer on a Windows computer so it is ready to print receipts from your POS system.
Step 1: Unbox and Prepare the Printer
Before connecting to your computer:
-
Remove all packaging materials.
-
Plug in the power cable.
-
Install the paper roll correctly (paper feeds from the bottom of the roll).
-
Turn the printer ON.
-
Confirm the power light is illuminated.
If the printer does not power on, check the power outlet and adapter.
Step 2: Decide Your Connection Type
Receipt printers typically connect in one of three ways:
-
USB (most common for single PC setups)
-
Network (Ethernet) – for multiple devices
-
Bluetooth (less common for desktops)
Choose the section below based on your setup.
OPTION A: Installing a USB Receipt Printer
Step 1: Connect the Printer
-
Plug the USB cable into the printer.
-
Plug the other end into your computer.
-
Windows may attempt to install a basic driver automatically.
Step 2: Install the Printer Driver
Even if Windows detects the printer, you should install the correct driver.
If you are using a common ESC/POS printer such as:
-
Sewoo
-
Epson
-
Xprinter
Visit the manufacturer’s website and download the official driver for your model.
Then:
-
Run the driver installation file.
-
Follow on-screen instructions.
-
Restart the computer if prompted.
Step 3: Confirm Printer Installation
-
Open Control Panel.
-
Click “Devices and Printers.”
-
Confirm your receipt printer appears in the list.
Right-click the printer → Select “Set as Default Printer.”
Step 4: Print a Test Page
-
Right-click the printer.
-
Select “Printer Properties.”
-
Click “Print Test Page.”
If the test page prints, installation is successful.
OPTION B: Installing a Network (Ethernet) Receipt Printer
This setup is used when multiple computers need access to the same printer.
Step 1: Connect to Router
-
Plug the Ethernet cable into the printer.
-
Plug the other end into your router.
-
Turn the printer ON.
Step 2: Get the Printer’s IP Address
To print a self-test page:
-
Turn the printer OFF.
-
Hold the FEED button.
-
Turn the printer ON while holding the button.
-
Release when it starts printing.
The printed sheet will show the IP address (example: 192.168.1.150).
Step 3: Add Printer to Windows
-
Open Control Panel → Devices and Printers.
-
Click “Add a Printer.”
-
If Windows does not find it, select:
“The printer that I want isn’t listed.” -
Choose “Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname.”
-
Enter the printer’s IP address.
-
Select the correct driver when prompted.
If the driver is not listed, click “Have Disk” and browse to the driver you downloaded from the manufacturer.
Step 4: Print a Test Page
Once installed:
-
Right-click printer → Printer Properties → Print Test Page.
If it prints successfully, the network setup is complete.
OPTION C: Installing a Bluetooth Receipt Printer
-
Turn Bluetooth ON on your computer.
-
Put the printer into pairing mode.
-
Open Windows Settings → Bluetooth & Devices.
-
Click “Add Device.”
-
Select the printer.
-
Install the driver if prompted.
-
Set as default printer.
Step 3: Configure the Printer for POS Printing
Once installed:
-
Open your POS software.
-
Go to Printer Settings.
-
Select the installed receipt printer.
-
Choose paper size:
-
80mm (most common)
-
58mm (smaller printers)
-
-
Save settings.
If your POS is web-based, you may need:
-
A print service
-
Print bridge software
-
Or a network print server
Browsers do not natively support raw ESC/POS printing without additional setup.
Step 4: Test an Actual Receipt
Create a test sale in your POS system and complete the transaction.
If the receipt prints clearly, your installation is complete.
Common Issues After Installation
If it still does not print:
-
Printer is offline in Windows.
-
Wrong driver selected.
-
Paper installed incorrectly.
-
USB cable faulty.
-
IP address changed (for network printers).
