How to add and manage payment methods (cash, card, bank transfer, Stripe)

Step 1: Open Payment Methods

Go to Settings > Payment Methods. Configured Payment Methods lists every way you take money - Cash, Card, Bank Transfer, Store Credit, Charge Account and any you have added - with the date each was added.

Use the switch to turn a method on or off - an off method no longer shows at checkout. Press the pencil to edit it. The built-in methods (Cash, Card, Bank Transfer, Store Credit, Charge Account) cannot be deleted; methods you added can.

Step 2: Choose the default

Under Default Checkout Payment Method, choose the method checkout starts on and press Save. If you do not set one, it is Cash.

Step 3: Add your own method

Press Add Custom Payment Method. Give it a Payment Method Name, choose the Payment Provider and Integration Type, and choose the account the money lands in under Money lands in - so your books put the takings in the right place. Leave Active on.

Taking cards with Stripe

Choose Stripe as the provider and paste your Publishable Key and Secret Key from your Stripe dashboard (Developers > API keys). The Webhook Secret is set up for you after you enter the secret key. Use Test Mode with test keys to try it first.

Good to know

• Your secret key is stored securely and only ever shown masked (for example sk_live_••••1234). Leave it as it is when editing; paste a new one only to replace it.
• Expenses come out of sets which account money leaves when an expense is paid this way.
• Card fees and when card money reaches your bank are set when editing a method - see How to settle card payments from clearing to the bank.
